What is Fat Liberation Theology?
Fat liberation theology is doing the work of fat liberation as Christians emphasizing freedom from oppression and the point of view of fat people.
Liberation theology originally developed in Latin America with Gustavo Gutiérrez’s book A Theology of Liberation (1971) cited as its first major publication. Liberation theology focuses on lived experience as the primary place for starting theological work and on freedom from oppression of all types including political and economic. Various other kinds of liberation theology have developed along the lines of other lived experiences such as Black liberation theology, Womanist liberation theology, Mujerista liberation theology, and queer liberation theology. Fat liberation theology exists within this ongoing and evolving tradition.
As a starting place, I recommend Rev. Dr. Anastasia Kidd’s Fat Church: Claiming a Gospel of Fat Liberation. This book helped launch me from a personal fat liberation journey into a more communal fat liberation theology journey.
